Mammy and Petra after one winter and two summers in the SF bay area.

Outdoors 24/7. Petra had been 3 in one pot. 30f took it down to one left and it looked close to dying itself. Mammy was a champ. A bit slow to re foliate but it is the SF bay area,so that it even does that is amazing. It would be like finding that a big red trunked palm can grow in California...

    Crotons in California.

Don,for you the skies the limit. Do you know Coconut palms are grown there in the deserts?- to the point they fruit?.I've seen pics of huge tree sized Singapore Plumeria- P.obtusa. Even Ficus bengahlensis. We just need a decent winter. Moose,Petra made me back off...but as Mammy grew (a lot)...

    Crotons in California.

Two years ago, this blog's topic would be nothing special to me. Now,I see the greatness-lol. I even now know to look for "Stoplight". If I don't find it- then I will order one next spring. Mammy for me did fantastic. It did finally color up and its in a 5 gallon pot now. I will go 25 one...

    Underutilized Tropical Color

It's expensive and I think a winter bloomer. So in Cali any light frost would take away the blooms for another year. I was bummed out that Wigandia's blooms are very tender to frost even if the plant looks fine. Dean,I have Clerodendron quadriloculare -Philippine Firecracker. Its going into its...

    Pink Diamond

Last year Dean,my red with pink (not sure of the name) did fine all summer in lots of sun. Then this spring,we had a heatwave and it badly scalded the same plant in the same place. Turned the middle of the leafs white. Now,its in less sun and looking close to normal.

    Pink Diamond

I thought "red sister" is the deep red-burgundy sold at HD? And the pink one something else. I have what you call red sister and yes- it will burn in summer full sun. The one I thought was red sister is much more sun tolerant and a strong grower. The plain green Ti's here are much more faster...

Areca vestiaria putting on some height

    The World Famous Hayward Mango.

My Baileys Mango "root stalk tree" turned out to have fruit that looked and tasted like Baileys. Two (3?) years ago I posted a photo of the tree (on garden web) after a freak cold weekend had killed the then potted Baileys to below the graft. You could clearly see the grafted part dead. When it...

    Shizem..Schiza..eh, Brazilian Fern Tree.

They aren't good container tree's. The one I posted died- the other seems to be doing ok. "M" are you going for a shorter rounded by pruning crown? Dean's photo on the immense Hawaiin tree seems to show the true form- rounded. So,I can see large Bonsai techniques being used to get the look on...

    Drought grown Parajubaea.

I couldn't tell you which one for sure. I would guess C.cocoides? They are where the city has turned off the water. Young Wine palms a block to the north and others to the south also are all on their own. They look good. I actually like these Mountain palms better uncleaned up with horizontal...

My Howea was planted in 1992,is healthy- never flowers.

Is that the first time? The last couple of years have been very good Howea growing seasons. Still, mine are just growth.

    Petra

Ok,2 of 3 Petra in a pot died by spring. The largest was defoliated but has come back somewhat- leaves 1/4 the size of last summers. But then,so has Mammy with 1/3 size leafs that slooooowly turn red. Or it might be a Mammy look alike as suggested here by a Croton expert. I must really...

    The World Famous Hayward Mango.

Dean there is a internet article out there about spraying a mango tree with potassium something to get non bloomers to bloom. I have a feeling, you won't need that. And if MOOSE is out there..has he heard of Mangoes that make larger fruit as they become larger tree's? Or is that size I'm getting...

    The World Famous Hayward Mango.

Another year for the WFHM. The fruit production has gone from 3 last year to 9 this year. Size appears to be the same if a bit plumper and no creases or wrinkles. The larger older root system is paying off.

Croton growing in hostile climate. For a Croton.

N.S., I see today..they are turning red. But much smaller then the original leafs. Are you saying its not Mammy but Indian Headress?

    Howea acheiving a goal.

Dean, the old saw the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago becomes the best time to plant a palm is 30 years ago. M,That's Cyathea medullaris-- the green form. Its a really big fern. Like another palm.

    Howea acheiving a goal.

When I planted this one in 1992,I pictured it one day towering over my home. A quarter century later, its clearing the roof line. Last year my pruning resulted in a big heavy Podocarpus branch falling dead center on the prized palm. I was sure i could swing that branch to the right...

Croton growing in hostile climate. For a Croton.

Mammy seems to have reverted to wild Croton. None of the color or leaf form of what it was last year. It never had any frost damage..but took some real cold in January. You think the leafs will turn red? get larger?
