Why Cultivars are Lost Forever

Driving home I noticed some croton refuse in a trash pile adjacent to the street. I looped around the block and found this Charmer. Although not rare, it is not all that common either. Very sad to see this old plant's possible demise. Hopefully it was just a hard prune. This croton was unseen in the back yard or I would have noticed before. Could have just as easily been a Miss Colette.

Ironically this yard was an account of mine 17 years ago.

Peyton - that is a size # 10 Croc for scale. It was definitely a Charmer. Out of color and unfed for years albeit.

Peyton - here are some close ups of Charmer leaves ...

You can see the ruffled leaf edges that are found on Charmer. I believe that Charmer is more cold tolerant than Piecrust from what our friends are saying in the Tampa/St. Petersberg area.

Those ruffled leaf edges sure fooled me...

Moose - I've got both Charmer and Piecrust here in the yard; neither has suffered much at all during the past two winters.
