Out of no where throwing interupted leaves

This one has never ever had interupted leaves before. Now, one side of the croton is throwing them like crazy. I can see them forming. The other side has nothing. It is one of my older ones in the garden and was a box store purchase.
Hardly has grown. It was also completely defoliated this winter too. I'm inclined to say at the time it was purchased, it was labeled Mammy. Is this sporting or is it something else?
