Air layering can force a sport

A few years ago, I air layered a Dayspring and the new air layer turned into Splotched Dayspring. I blew it off as a freak occurrence but now William Jennings Bryan has done the same thing. It was the normal veined form but after removing the air layer and potting it up, the plant has become a blotched sport. This is the second time an air layer has been partially responsible for a plant sporting. Has anyone else witnessed this?

Ray - There's no question that ANYTHING you do to a Croton has the potential for causing it to sport. William Jennings Bryan sports quite often, though, and I'm guessing if you walked past it with a cold drink, the new leaves would come out blotched.

Wish my William Jennings Bryan would sport. 4 years in the ground, 6 ft. tall, 4 ft. wide - still holding true to form.

Never had an air layer become a sport - they usually just flower. Even if I've never seen the mother plant ever flower.
