The Colors of Cordylines (The Ti Plant)

The last of my seedling pics for now. This one was entirely green its whole life until just recently.

I've pretty much given up on names because everyone seems to have their own names for tis. Sometimes I try to remember what they were sold as. These are Roy's Black, Early Morning Diamond, and.... ??

Angela, You have great seedlings with geat colors. Thank you for posting the beautys. I have lots of seed that should mature soon. I hope to get a few nice plants in a few years from them to show.

The first two are "green spoon" from a cutting, but the third one I bought at Walmart thinking it was green spoon (because when I bought it, it was only red and green) and then about a year later those lighter colors on the top showed up. Does green spoon turn different colors after it gets older? I'm confused!

Angela, I have not seen "Green Spoon" before, but your rooted cuttings of Green Spoon looks a lot like what I have as "Camaroon". I have it growing in a pot in shade now, but I think it needs more light. Here is Camaroon now. Check out the photo of Camroon on The International Cordyline Society site.

Do you know what the heck it is?? Does "green spoon" turn into that? I was very very happy that it decided to change colors on me. Nice surprise from a $3.00 Walmart plant.

Was the growing point damaged at some time? I read that Ti plants can sport from side shoots or from a damaged growing point. I have not seen any Ti plant that come close to the looks of your colorful Green Spoon.

No it wasn't damaged, it is growing from the same point it always has. I'm calling it green spoon because Cindy Andersen of J.D. Andersen nursery (one of our sponsors) calls it that. Those plants are only about 6 in. across but the weird one is about 8 in across. I can't tell how big cameroon is and I think mine (the normal ones) have a lot more burgundy in the leaves... but maybe the red doesn't show up in the picture of the cameroon.

Angela, My Camaroon (L) (when it was getting better light), Your G. Spoon (R). My Camaroon is about 6" across.

Ugh, I just went to the International cordyline society site. What we call green spoon looks like "brandy lime." THIS is EXACTLY why I don't bother learning the names. The only ones you can count on being the same are: Ballerina, Willi's Gold, New Guinea Black, Peter Buck, Kiwi and Miss Andrea. I just looked through their whole photo gallery and I've decided not to care about the names anymore. I'm just going to go by our names here in Hawai'i like, Hilo Boy, Pele's Smoke, Princess Leisha etc!!!

I also gave up on learning the names on most. Its like the names on the other colorful leaf plant. But yes yours looks like what they have as Brandy lime. I really think the knuckle heads that grow plants for the mass market big box print 1 name label and stick it on the lot of plants. I have noticed it on Crotons. Here Petra is put on most Crotons.

Our version of Lemon Lime (which is from a cutting that is a couple years old) with other happy tis....

Just want to bump some life back to this thread. First pic was a seedling from a Red Sister a few years ago. It is really nice to watch this one mature. This is the first time some orange color has shown on the leaves.

Nice seedlings! I have observed something that I now call the "3 ft. rule" for tis (from seed). A seedling's true colors won't come out until it has reached about 3 feet tall. For some reason cuttings show their color a lot sooner.

Angela, That 3' rule for the larger leaf Tis looks to be a good rule of thumb. The Red Sister seedling is now about 2' tall and I have watched the colors change as this plant has grown. I just hope the orange color holds in the future.

Here are pictures that I have posted of a particular seedling... I am reposting them together and then I will post some updated pics. The green juno in the last photo is the same tiny green one in the second pic.

Here it is today.... it has a lot more pink on the new leaves. I can't wait for this one to get big because the older leaves get really dark... almost as dark as a new guinea. It's going to look just like new guinea but with color.

Here is a parent ti and the babies I got from it... ugh, all those berries and I only 9 plants. You can see how different they all are from each other. No striping yet :( but I don't expect any until around 3 ft. A chicken for scale... that ti is a lot larger than the other ones still in the pots because I set him free.

Hi Guys,

Im from Singapore and just wanna say you have the most amazing cordylines there! Cordylines hardly set seed naturally in our climate (despite being truly tropical - days 30-33 degrees celsius with nights a balmy 28, year round humidity toward 90% etc). We are also lagging behind in the number of cultivars grown. Anyone keen on swapping cuttings/seedlings?

Sorry if I duplicated any of these! The last one is an update of one of my seedlings. I hope it turns out nice!
The first one is awesome it would be more awesome if there wasn't spots on it... it has bluish green in it and no pink, otherwise it is similar to pink diamond.
