I saw your question on Ficus Ruby. I have one and its a fast grower, hardy and mine grew from a small 4 leafed 4" potted plant to 12 x12' plant in 4 years..IN A POT! I'm afraid to plant it. Its much more everything-color,growth rate, than plain Ficus elastica variegata. I think Dave on the palm...

    Variegated Monstera deliciosa/

Ok..it turns out its not Monstera deliciosa variegated. Its Monstera borsigiana. Is that a different species or cultivar name I haven't nailed down. But,the M. borsigiana acts different..much more viny and faster..with smaller foliage. How to tell the two apart? The base of the leaf- where it...

Anybody heard of Miconia calvescens tried in California?

My thought is- its too spectacular a tropical not to have been tried. Hence none are for sale!...but just wondering since this is such a weed in the tropics

    Lets Talk Curly Boy

Seems like a smaller Mammy. Its changed since I bought in March (time of photo). The greenhouse leaves pretty much fell off and right now its budding all over with green new leaves- a good sign its adjusting to real sun. Seems to do more in less warmth then Petra. A better Croton for...

Acacia dealbata. Naturalized in the SF eastbay.

I drove by today (foggy) Dean and noticed that those tree's are sort of a nice rust color right now. Faded blooms or pods? I wasn't close enough.

    Variegated Monstera deliciosa/

Has it been FOUR YEARS??. Well,I want to move it...where i have it? I cant even see it well. And leaning on a Privet isn't very accurate to natural habitat! I wonder if I really need to dig up much soil? I have a feeling these things have all their nutrients in the stems..as long as I don't...

    The cold snap.

What was the final tally? Who came through fine, who wimped out? What about the box store staples like Petra and Mammy? Stopight lived up to reputation? I've seen some of those very exotic Thai variety's with the big crinkled leaves. I can see those as first to cave in. As always, the more...

Show me your Stoplight. Or hardiest known Crotons.

Thanks Phil. Its already had to face cool rains (67f) and looks perky. It has some stoplight vibe to it. Crotons are great and my gut feeling is as the bay area has grown..Crotons can be done - in pots at least.

Show me your Stoplight. Or hardiest known Crotons.

Got home. What do you know about "Curly Boy"..is it Stoplight like? Hardier then most? I also bought a Petra. They are so great looking. I might over winter in some makeshift greenhouse. It wont die after 2 years this time.

Show me your Stoplight. Or hardiest known Crotons.

Now,or after a freeze. I almost ordered a trio...but the price for those 4" potted plants with shipping was far too much. I might order one...but I will never live long enough to see that be a shrub. Maybe. Mrs Iceton is another..and the Fiddle leafed that used to be so commonly sold? Is rare as...

What if Red Palm Weevil makes it to the Canary Islands?

Hello Horst. I would guess that Palm that is world renowned would get an all out push back from the Government- Malathion to sterilized female weevils. I hadn't known they had reached the islands.

What if Red Palm Weevil makes it to the Canary Islands?

The Canary island date palms look to be easy prey for the weevil. I wonder what the authority's are doing to prevent a mass extinction?

Acacia dealbata. Naturalized in the SF eastbay.

Maybe other parts of the bay area also- but I can only vouch its doing great in Hayward- Castro valley where it makes small groves in bands on hill sides. Interesting how it sticks to those bands- not above or below the band you find them in. This is also called the Silver Wattle. Native to...
