    Variegated Monstera deliciosa/

I think you might think they are getting enough water when they are not. The ground looks dry-- I don't see a speck of moss on any lava rock..and this is winter! The raised bed is a good idea that backfires when you have plants that are rain-forest plants. What you have around them? Broms look...

In Praise of the King Palm.

I know that palm specialists in soucal always say "so common" or "I cut my down for Dypsis"..and the photo shows a palm not as nice as a King, and fewer fronds. Its like a smaller King! Its time to admit we are lucky to have the King. Its time to admit the hardest core palm lovers homes canopy has...

    Name this Ficus by photo.

That's the thing- I say F.microcarpa. Some think that and F.nitida are the same plant. But local F.nitida look the same now as they do in July. Here's one only a few blocks from the other. Note, its perfect color and non weepy foliage.

    Hayward Ravenea rivularis in winter.

Once totally unknown to the bay area...the ongoing streak of 26 years without a climate re set freeze is allowing subtropicals like never before to survive or even do great here. Un like soucal..where they have always had years and decades of no hard freezes..this is new to SF bay. Did you know...

Fremont CA Bay Area Mango tree on YouTube.

Avocados are like weeds. You've never been to the bay area? Its z 10a. A guy in Hayward was in the paper for growing pineapples in his front yard. Edible banana's. With me,its finding a spot that isnt shaded by my homes. Otherwise I would be growing coconuts....Right next to my Colorado Blue...

Fremont CA Bay Area Mango tree on YouTube.

To make a long story short,I was told about this tree by Andy in San Diego who used to live on this street. I passed that along to a local expert who does gardening videos about Fremont.

One of the Biggest I've Seen - Allagoptera arenaria

Kona coast must be a killer spot for Cycads. I bet Encephalartos would grow like weeds there. That palm has a Cycas deboensis look to it.

    Name this Ficus by photo.

Sunset's book of western gardening says Ficus microcarpa has weepy foliage. Ficus nitida (aka retusa) does not. Other sources say the three are all the same plant- F.nitida. This tree in Hayward weeps. All others in the bay area I have seen are not weepy- Ficus nitida, the famous street tree's...

Gardenia gjellerupii Thai Gardenia. Any info? Californiacentric?

I ran across this on a Philippines blog...Top says hardy to below freezing. I like the yellow flowers. I'm heavy in the reds and whites this would be a nice contrast. I think Top Tropicals is good with me borrowing their pic.

    Variegated Monstera deliciosa/

Are the other plain Monstera's in town looking burned from water? If not,you might not be getting them enough after all.Tough call since "give them more bad water" if it is that would be bad advice. You wouldn't be the first one to go to R.O. water in soucal to avoid the salty Colorado water.

    Anthurium warocqueanum in the"Wild"

wow- You got that right. Only the UC Berkeley greenhouse collections has the giant Anthurium species. Its hard for me to imagine a climate so warm and so wet and humid that those plants grow..on their own. I was looking Dean,at a photo I took of a Plumeria plant I bought at HD that had come in...

Brahea 'Clara' and the Hayward Palm Garden at Chabot College.

Sorry about the repeats...my finger hit "full image" too many times.I guess every time you do,it repeats the pic. What do you make of the Brahea with the upright fronds? I've never seen that before. And the fan palm in the ivy- a Thrinix?

Brahea 'Clara' and the Hayward Palm Garden at Chabot College.

The lighting was brutal. Sorry that the B.'C' didnt take a good pic. Some nice growth on the Mountain palms as well as the others since my last visit. Photos also never show how massive the trunk on Wine Palms are. So---

A Nice "Joey" - Johannesteijsmannia altifrons

Somebody in Livermore- inland from Hayward by 25 miles, says he has one growing outdoors. Young, but growing. You never know unless you try.
