Blechnum brasiliense - A Miniature Tree Fern

Only gartersnakes. They hardly count. I know what you mean though Dr. So many visitors who grew up in the tropics do ask me that question. Specifically, Tree Snakes. I guess those are widespread. But here? Nothing but mouse eating snakes. Not a single species of tree snakes in...

Blechnum brasiliense - A Miniature Tree Fern

Very water needy. One good hard dry out and they are dead. Here's my Cyathea medullaris...it almost bit the dust around October...the long dry summer and my trying to save water caused a near loss of all fronds..it was down to 2 when I watered it after a three day drought in a heatwave.

    Orchids As Weeds

Sure, sounds like a great orchid for all who read this site. Hardy to z9 I now read. I've been adding..orchid here and orchid there. I have no room for trees or large shrubs any longer. So,I sort of settle on small C&S or Orchid jewels. Or ferns. Better anyways Dean,as getting older means not...

    Petra

Petra and Mammy gave out at the end of December. Shocking since they looked fine,I covered for a predicted 32f...and they just wilted like boiled lettuce. That much wilt, that early in winter is sure death. I might try again. I got two years out of Petra, one and a half out of Mammy, and if I...

    Lipstick experiment

On garden webs Palms Forum, a person is going to try a 3meter Lipstick in ground,in Brisbane Oz. Now,I mentioned they don't grow in Miami Beach and that- Brisbane seems tropical to most of the world, but its not even as winter warm as soufla. I was told that Brisbane IS warmer than Miami Beach...

My Maridol has a first flower bud.

The whole plant is about 30" in ~ three years. I have my doubts it will fruit, but this is the first time I ever had a Papaya live past a December, let alone this group live into their third summer. 10" of Papaya height a year means its going to be awhile before I see it look like something...

    Calathea

The last is an easy coastal valley grower in California... to farther inland in soucal. The Stromanthe Tricolor? Its hardy ONLY IF you have very hot summers. I know the same soucal mild areas that seem semi tropical get..straggly growth, die back, straggly growth. Like those palms so tender- but a...

Red Ti starts to flower in Hayward.

RIGHT ON!..Thanks Scott. The first image on Google of A.L. looked almost identical to mine...minus the winter roughage. Grows out of that fast.

Red Ti starts to flower in Hayward.

I never had a Ti plant live long enough to grow let alone grow, trunk a bit, and now flower. You know in Hayward,we have good weather, great water quality..and after that I close my mouth. But,back to plants. I've seen this called "Red Sister"..but I also have seen that neon pink and red Ti (that...

    Parajubeas?

Like Dean, they all look alike to me. I just call any I see P.cocoides because that's what towers at the Oakland Palmetum at 37north. These are not small palms. Height seems to be near Queen palm and trunk girth more. I also see them planted all around Union City and Fremont because of Nelson...

Dypsis hovomatsina - Top 10, no Top 5

The most important question is...does it grow in California? Do you have photos Dean, of Dypsis decipiens happy in Hawaii? Also it must be terrible to have mosses cover the trunks of Hawaiin palms.:D

    Majesty palm.

Looking well for late winter. That whole shift of mild from southern areas to the bay area is making an impact in landscaping.

    Name this Ficus by photo.

Ok,it came to me to try this on another browser..Tropicscape works perfect. So,I guess its a Firefox issue with palmpedia. FF wont allow Adobe flash. Dean, you think thats why this site is a bit wonky on FF?

    Name this Ficus by photo.

Dont know how to do that- other then make a photo my monitors screen shot. Basically..as I scroll down or up, the Tropiscape bar doesn't move. It stays put. I've never seen that with any other board. And I'm using a brand new PC,windows 10. Its the same as when I first mentioned it with my...

    Adenium obesum - Desert Rose

A.obesum is one of the more tender. It might do well in mildest soucal,in a pot, kept out of winter rains. I have A.arabicum, looks much like A.obesum, with maybe a more sculptural fatter trunk. It believe it or not, does fine outdoors here in a pot/out of rains etc, here in the bay area. I've had...
