    Variegated Monstera deliciosa/

That's awesome looking Carter. It has the look of a Pothos- a vine that does not do much in California. Variegated Monstera's sort of fill that void. Those huge leaves and big stems make a dramatic statement. Even the fruits will be swirled. Like I might have mentioned, mine was growing...

My Maridol has a first flower bud.

Thanks Dean. California's climate has changed much since I was kid. I tried these plants- both Solo and Maridols in the 80's,90's and so forth..never got past November let alone 4 years.

My Maridol has a first flower bud.

Ok, Those fell off in the cool spring weather. But in July it had grown and re flowered. A few days ago I saw something I never thought would happen- I have small Papaya fruit on the now 4' tree. This plants and plants are seed to now grown outdoors. Maridols.

    Phoenicophorium borsigianum in California?

A friend told me that he saw one growing at a home in San Diego of this super tropical for four years. I think Dean might know if there are more in California. What a great looking small palm too.

    Hibiscus 'Enlightenment'. Yellow.

This came out very nice. Growing in my "Suntropical" yard (71f!) in July.

    Stereotype California. W. robustus.

It also shows Dean- take serious care of those palms and they look world class. This guy spent some bucks to have old fronds and old boots removed- last year.

    Stereotype California. W. robustus.

Seeing them used in a grove and then the boots and old fronds(most) removed to reveal a smooth trunk that disappears into a lush green crown of fronds makes for a nice look. IF you were to buy a home like this,it would be a good start for more a exotic palms to fill in. Unless you are die hard...

A belated 4th of July photo.

We stopped royal tyranny...then we started slavery. Crazy. Anyway's my version.

    Corymbia filicifolia.

There is whole avenue of these Eucalyptus relatives. Beautiful flowering trees. Bee's were all over them. With Agapanthus..I'm sure Dean remembers seeing one or two in California.

    Chaemadorea metallica.

A heavy metal palm. The hard part is keeping snails off it and even harder? Getting enough light to look metallica but not so much it burns in summer. Still, wish I had bought more of this 8 year old plant.

    Variegated Monstera deliciosa/

A two year later update. What happened since then? Its grown. Only, within months of planting it..I walked up to it since it seemed to droop fast. There,I saw that the base of the plant was gone. Gophers had eaten the stem to an inch or two above ground. It was a hovering plant!. What I've done...

    Monstera Fruit.

Well, free doesn't mean bad. Its the tropical version of picking Dandelions for a salad..fresh spring leaves are a delight. Or miners lettuce on a bay trail walk. You can go to Youtube and watch North Americans visiting The Canary's or Mexico or wherever and tasting it and enjoying Monstera...

    Monstera Fruit.

Its been awhile since I checked in Sorry. But here's mine after I did the "Paper bag and Apple" to get the fruit to ripen. It worked. The kitchen smelled like a pleasant Pineapple...and even when I tried eating it slow so others could taste..the leftover filled the refrigerator with the same...

    Dave's dead Travelers.

I see on the old palm board Dave's La Habra Travelers died suddenly. I had that same thing happen to my GBOP planted right up against my home...with no gutters. I think the winter rains plus months of chill soil creates some kind of root rot. I think if you look around the net every now and...

    Monstera Fruit.

This year,I think its the only one. My vine is in too much shade for good production. Our mild cool climate means they should be getting much more sun for that. I think you all know there are cultivars of Monstera for food in tropical countries. Most Asian. Some of those are big cultivars with...

    Monstera Fruit.

I cut this one today. Its going into a paper bag with an apple. At about 19 months on the vine,I was worried in our cool summers it would rot- I've had that happen after a long wait too.

    Hibiscus 'Enlightenment'. Yellow.

I picked this up at OSH. My only other hibiscus is the near wild 'Lipstick' that I planted in ground and it takes care of itself. Hardy as nails. This cultivar has a tender look to it. I'm sure it hates a freezing temp. I want to try cuttings in ground..see what happens. For now the motherplant...
