Update on CPS - Collapsing Petiole Syndrome

Well, unless you've got rain like Bo those surface roots probably aren't going to sustain the palm. You've got a lot more experience than me and I'm sure your instincts are better, but I figured I'd throw out a suggestion on the long shot it works. I assume you've applied a heavy mulch layer...

Update on CPS - Collapsing Petiole Syndrome

Thanks for the compliment, I think. On a similar subject, possibly, are your Neoveitchias sustaining more healthy leaves now? I thought that was water related too.

Update on CPS - Collapsing Petiole Syndrome

Hmmmm. Good news. My Howeas have not experienced a collapsed petiole either, since potting up and making sure they stay moist.

    Doomed in Zone 6

They have some really nice silver colored ones right now. Not much up top in the way of leaves, but the roots fill out pots like there's no tomorrow. Wierd spaghetti looking rootball. Probably need to be protected for several years until it gains some girth.

    Doomed in Zone 6

Adam, Sounds like you've got a nice dry climate that would support the Mazari Palm, Nannorhops ritchiana. Another possibility is Rhapidophylum hysterix, the needle palm. Do some research on those and let us know if they'll jive with your winter lows. Good luck. Keep us posted.

    Calling all Dypsis Experts

Re: D. heteromorpha. In the close up of Daryls plant you can see the heavy ramenta on the leaflets near the petiole. This is the same "ramenta heavier near the petiole" characteristic that the D. heteromorpha in cultivation (JD Andersen source) show.

The Madagascar Expedition Of Jeff And Suchin Marcus

Whoah, mama! What a presentation! Nice work Kim and Dean and Jeff. So, is there a second half? At the end he says he's got 30 minutes to go. Did they take a bathroom break and come back? Do you have slides of the bathroom break? Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!

    The Lowland Ficus dammaropsis

DeanO, Mine does open very bright orangey/red new leaves. The veins are red also but seem to fade to green after a while. Mine is in full, all day sun, but I think it's the same as Ron's red veined one pictured above, from what I remember. Matt's and mine are from the same batch that Jeff...

    Help with Dypsis ID

It's either D. lut or D. baronii. I've got a Dypsis baronii that you gave me several years ago Dean that is doing that leaf overlap and recurve thing a lot, that's why I say that. D. lut usually dosen't have that general feel. It has a unique shape to it.

The Colors of Cordylines (The Ti Plant)

Yeah, they were all green at first. No red. The red is showing up more as they age so be patient and I bet you'll get some that show color.

    Carpoxylon macrospermum

Re: C. macrospermum Well, not much to look at. But considering it sat there all winter with no protection I guess that's a victory. The yellowing and sunburn only happened recently as the sun's angle is getting more intense. The cold spotting was very minimal as you can see.

    Alocasia zebrina

We were talking about germinating Ti plants from seed in another thread. Well here's one that I germinated from seed that I never thought would go. Alocasia zebrina. Anyone else growing these? Ever germinated a seed? Mother plant was growing at Dean's place in Kona.

The Colors of Cordylines (The Ti Plant)

You can see that many have damped off. They get just a couple of mites on them too and they just hate that. Very prolific germiators though. Each berry has multiple seeds inside of it. As you can see by pic #2, two plants from the same batch. One is green and one is sporting some good red...
