Washingtonia filiferas with a story

The W.filifera is not often seen here in FL, so I wanted to share my experience with it.I collected the filifera seed from habitat in the California canyons Labor Day 2001. I soaked them a day and planting the seed when the 9-11 news was breaking. The palms (4) were put in the ground 1 yr later on 9-11. Here is a picture of one of the filiferas as it looks now. If you look close at the picture to the left you can see a little of a second filifera. The palms were planted in doubles about 7' apart, replacing the tall Washingtonia hybrids that were removed after lightning strikes.

A nice palm and nice tribute to remember a fateful day.

I have heard people return to California from Florida commenting on how much nicer even W. robusta look there than in road medians in SoCal.
