Fortunately I had my camera with me when driving by the old Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Fl. last week. I had a few minutes to spare, so I did a run thru & snapped a few pics of some of the garden's croton collection. No names, just photos. Feel free to ID 'em.

The 3rd one in the fourth group could be Connie Cutler.

Kurt Decker donated the Davis Collection to Flaming Gardens. I wonder if many of the photos are from the Davis Collection?

My guess would be for the following, and I plan on dropping by in the next few days to get a closer look.

#3 & #4 in post #1......Wilma

#4 in post #2......Peace

#1 in post #3.......Madame Fernand Kohl

#3 in post #3.......Jungle Queen

#1 in post #5.......Flamingo or Columbiana

#2 in post #5.......Evening Embers?

I agree with the other choices, with the exceptoin of Ron's, definitely not a Lt. Paget.

Anyone been to Flamingo gardens lately? Are they taking good care of the croton collection?

It seems that many gardens bypass caring for crotons in favor of other plants. :(

Maybe we could plan the spring 2012 meeting there. Looks like a great venue!

I think that's a great suggestion, Bren. Certainly for 2012 sometime. I wasn't going to mention this any time soon, but Cleo has mentioned to me on a couple of occassions that he plans on holding a big birthday party for B. Frank Brown in March next year for his 95th birthday. I think this would be a very important event that would be well worth attending. As I get more news from Cleo, I will inform everyone.

Today after lunch, I drove over to the gardens to take a look. I was a little disappointed though. I walked over to the big grouping of them near the entrence. Some of the larger trees and shrubs need to be pruned back to allow more sunlight on them. There was some croton scale, but not too bad.

The one thing I was wondering about was, if Kurt donated the Davis collection supposedly, where are they? Did he keep all the good stuff? Because I didn't see very much that look unusual. There was maybe 3 crotons in that total planting area( approx. 25 different ones) that stood out. The rest of them were the most common of the common. And I do mean common. With the exception of something like Wilma. Now I didn't walk the whole gardens, but I did look around pretty good. Just my two cents worth....

I could not figure out why I could not get my pictures of Grandma to look like what I was seeing. Then I realized I was getting reflective light from the proper perspective. The two previous posts were taken from atop an 8 ft. ladder. Here are a couple more bird's eye views and the 8 ft. laddr for scale. Grandma has been really enjoying this mild winter. ;)
