Latest planting date for my area

Just wondering, for those of you who live a little further north, what is the latest ideal time for planting before the cold comes? I've seen that crotons that are well-established fare better with winter cold. I'm in Sarasota very near the coast but still on the mainland. The coldest while I've been living here has been 27-28 degrees for a few hours. Of course, that could be in December or in February.

I was thinking mid-August to be sure, since it starts cooling around Halloween. What do you think? Ana

Ana, I play it safe now. I will not plant after Labor Day. BTW Great job you are doing with the Wiki pages.

Thanks so much, Scott. I am learning how to identify a few more crotons, hopefully!

BTW, thanks for the planting info. So a little later than I thought. That's good to know. Ana
