I do not worry about the 40's or even the high 30's. They have to get use to those temps up here. The Piecrust and Zanzibar are potted and will get pulled in for the colder times when/if it comes.

Scott, in south Florida, 40's are like our 30's. Crotons in south Florida are exposed to less cold so subsequently, they experience the cool weather impacts at higher temperatures. 40 something degree temps don't affect my crotons at all unless they were recently acquired from the "wimpier" plants down south. With few exceptions, it takes at least one winter season for plants from down south to grow a "thicker skin".

So how do crotons in south Florida respond to temps in the 40's?

They drop leaves and get leggy. The longer they're in the ground the better chance you'll have of keeping them full, but newer plants, especially those exposed to the cold, dry wind, will suffer.
