I was watching a show on Belize and saw a plant new to me. It was growing as a trimmed 5' hedge,it had rounded and some cupped leafs, glossy and some yellow variegation, not much of that. The undersides of every leaf was a burgundy.
Some Croton? maybe?

Good luck getting any ID from a short verbal description like that. But, and I will be corrected if I am wrong, I don't think I have ever seen a Croton with burgundy undersides. But I would like one. :)

Its S64 Ep6 of House Hunters International. If anybody has Comcast,Infinity or maybe on YouTube thats the show. It can't be something common or grown in California. In Belize common enough to be just another hedge plant.
