Beaucarnea recurvata (aka Ponytail Palm)

This one came with the home purchase and now stands around 16' tall.

I have always thought of the Ponytail Palm as a really neat looking plant and always wanted to add another one to the landscape. When I was out and about this week this little baby came home with me. Do not know of diffrent cultivars of Beaucarra but this looked interesting with the purple leaves.

I've always been a big fan of "Ponytails." There aren't many plants that are tougher, as easily transplanted, and just plain bullet proof. If you know someone that wants to grow something "tropical looking, but can't even keep their lawn green, you need to recommend a Ponytail, and they will think they are master gardeners. I can remember seeing one that had been taken out of its 15 Gal container and placed on top of a bench. There was no soil left - just one mass of roots. And this was an abandoned nursery with a plastic roof. So I don't know how many years it had been sitting on that bench, with to soil and no water, and it was still growing just fine.

Ditto on the variegates! I had a few, but they're gone now - I have three regulars - one cute little baby (Impulse purchase at a box store), an ancient one, basketball size caudex, only 1 1/2 feet tall total, and a very old weird contorted Bonsai specimen - I can't describe it, but will take pictures for y'all!

Ray, It has bloomed for a number of years now, but it did not flower in 2010.

Jeff, The variegated is on my wish list. Just have to find one.

Dean, From the little info I have read on the variegated form, it will not have the large bulge at the bottom.

After a little work I now have 2 plants. Not a bad deal for $5.00.

As expected the variegated PT took on a little pink color for the Winter.

Lamar, I got multi branching along the stem once mine flowered. Lets see if that multi branching trait holds true.
